your entire explanation does not preclude doing it fairly, with a core charge. It would definitely help if you had a couple of extra cores lying around. Plus, if you're charging a core charge, the customers are motivated to get their core back to you in a timely fashion. Furthermore, you are doing custom work so if the customer has to wait a little, it's better for them to rely on one person's honesty (yours) than your having to rely on a bunch of other unknown people's honesty. A guy wants your short shifter. He sends you the cost of a shifter plus a core charge. You send him a shifter. He returns his core to you. You refund the core charge. That is a fair business deal in anybody's book. I know, I'm trying to fix something that ain't broke, so I'll go back to work now :c)
